He is the only board-certified orthodontist in Brevard. Dr. Farrar graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham with his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. He went on to complete a General Practice Residency at Denver General Hospital and an Orthodontic Residency at Emory University School of Dentistry.

Dr. Joe Farrar’s father was a coal miner and his mother was a third grade teacher. “I was born in a mining camp of about 1,000 people,” he recalls. “There was a lot of diversity in that little town, and I believe that helped me realize at a young age how similar we all really are.”

He was able to go to college on a football scholarship. He had intended to major in marine biology, however a grant from the National Science Foundation pre-empted those plans. He had the unique opportunity to attend two years of medical school before going into dental school. Dr. Farrar served his dental residency at Denver General Hospital where he treated both children and adults dealing with all types dental trauma. “I really practiced all the dental specialties there,” he recalls.

After graduating from dental school, he practiced dentistry in Dothan, Alabama, for a year, and then entered a two-year orthodontic residency at Emory University in Atlanta. From there, he and his wife, Gayle, moved to Hendersonville in 1981 when he set up his practice. A music teacher in the Atlanta public school system, Gayle helped Joe start his practice and focused on raising their family. They have a daughter, Morgan, and a son, Grayson Israel, both graduates of Wake Forest University.

Dr. Farrar is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics and maintains memberships with such organizations as the American Association of Orthodontists, Southern Association of Orthodontists, North Carolina Association of Orthodontists, Henderson County Dental Society and the Seattle Study Club.

He is an active member of this community. From supporting families to children, the homeless, the hungry, the hurting, the athletes, and the actors, he has made a difference with them all.

“We have given over $30,000 to the school system with awards to kids over the years,” he says. He has supported numerous non-profits including the Children and Family Resource Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County, Four Seasons Hospice, Manna Food Bank, the Rescue Mission, the Community Foundation of Henderson County and the Henderson County Humane Society. He was one of the initial contributors to build the new Youth Theatre at Flat Rock Playhouse. In order to bring symphonic music to the children of Henderson County, Dr. Farrar funded performances by the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra for all elementary students. Through the years he has also supported numerous youth sports programs, and funded various scholarships for students.

“All the good people here have enabled us to do this,” Dr. Farrar says.

And his service reach expands globally. He was on the fact-finding team of Rotarians who began medical mission trips to Honduras several years ago, and he has traveled there to offer free clinics three times. He has also been on a dental mission trip to Tanzania as well as an orthodontic mission trip to Israel.

dudley1FB-006October is National Orthodontic Month. “We just reached out to 1,500 Henderson and Transylvania County school students, issuing toothbrushes and talking about the importance of taking care of your teeth,” he says. “It’s almost impossible to believe, but there are kids here in our own community who have never had a toothbrush.” He shakes his head.

From football players, to baseball teams, cheerleading squads and volleyball players, Dr. Farrar has supported youth sports programs throughout Western North Carolina.

During his leisure time, he enjoys watching college football, playing golf, sailing and hanging out with his dog, Dudley.
